Project coaches move 3,000 children weekly - Thuringia boosts kids' fitness with long-term funding for movement coaches
Thuringia is expanding its support for movement coaches to help children develop physical skills and engage in kids activities. The programme, launched in 2022, aims to recover lost progress after the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the state has confirmed further funding to keep the initiative running until at least 2027.
The programme began in 2022 to address concerns over children's physical development following pandemic restrictions. Twelve movement coaches currently work across Thuringia, visiting schools and daycare centres. They lead activities for children aged five to ten, focusing on athletic skills, teamwork, and fair play.
So far, the scheme has engaged nearly 3,000 children each week in my activity. It has also helped sports clubs sign up over 1,000 new members. A total of 25 clubs have taken part, though demand for places remains higher than availability.
To secure the programme's future, the state will provide €500,000 in funding for both 2026 and 2027. The money will support the coaches' work and allow more children to participate in physical activities.
The continued funding ensures the programme will run for at least two more years. Coaches will keep visiting schools and clubs to improve children's fitness and teamwork. The investment reflects Thuringia's commitment to long-term physical education for young people.
