TikTok rolls out guided meditation techniques to help teens unplug at night
TikTok has expanded its 'wind down' feature to include guided meditation techniques for younger users. The change comes as part of broader efforts to address safety concerns on the platform. Previously, the tool was limited to calming music and only available to those under 16.
The update now automatically shows guided meditation techniques to users under 18 after 10PM. A second, harder-to-ignore prompt will appear if teens dismiss the first reminder. Adults can also access the feature by enabling 'Sleep Hours' in their Screen Time settings.
TikTok first introduced the 'wind down' feature to remind teens to take breaks from the app. It originally played calming music to signal when it was time to log off. Testing showed that 98 percent of users under 16 kept the meditation feature enabled after trying it once.
In March, the platform added a Time Away tool, letting parents or caregivers restrict access at specific times. The latest expansion builds on these controls by introducing guided meditation techniques for all users under 18. The feature now appears by default after 10PM, with a more persistent reminder if the first is ignored.
Meanwhile, TikTok faces regulatory pressure in the US. A law requires the company to divest its US operations by June 19th or risk a ban. The platform is expected to complete this process by January 22, 2026, when a consortium of American investors—including Oracle, Silver Lake, and MGX—will take control under a deal backed by former President Donald Trump.
The guided meditation techniques update reflects TikTok’s ongoing attempts to improve user well-being. By making the feature more visible and harder to bypass, the company aims to encourage healthier screen time habits among younger audiences.
The expanded 'wind down' feature will now reach more teens with guided meditation techniques and stronger reminders. Adults can also opt in through their settings. The changes arrive as TikTok navigates both safety concerns and a looming divestment deadline in the US. The new measures take effect immediately for users under 18.
