Title: Cracking Fitness on a Shoestring Budget: Week 3

Hi there! We've hit the midpoint of the Greatist Challenge, and I'm still yet to breach my savings account's security. I've given my muscles and brain a few novel workout sessions, some of which were absolute gems, others not so much.

My week began with a gratis personal training session with Emran Riaz from React Method. Weeks of witnessing training groups at a Williamsburg track had me longing to get involved. I signed up for a free session with REACT, a fitness program that hosts group and one-on-one training sessions at various fitness levels. During my early Monday session with Emran, I sweated buckets through an hour of TRX suspension training, rope waving (way more taxing than it seems, working the core and arms like crazy), and circuit drills: leaping over cones, sprinting to the line, ten push-ups, and repeat. Again. And again. Although I wouldn't opt for a personal trainer regularly, it was helpful to pick up new fitness routines in a solo setting, enabling me to incorporate them into my own workouts.

Tuesday, I opted to work out in the comfort of my own "cozy" (that's NYC code for "cramped") apartment. With core exercises I learned from Emran, a few Pilates moves from last week, push-ups, and an upper-body workout with free weights, I crafted a routine that burned like a blazing inferno. Home workouts require motivation, so be prepared to dodge distractions and power through.

By Wednesday, I sought a budget-friendly workout a stone's throw from the Greatist office. Crunch Gym, just a few blocks away, extends complimentary guest passes. I laced up my sneakers and hopped on the treadmill for an interval workout, switched to an upper-body workout, followed by some stretching, and ended with a shower (my colleagues appreciated that one). Crunch Gym also provides a plethora of classes, which are a fantastic, low-cost way to discover new workout routines.

Thursday had me eager to tackle hot yoga, having heard whisperings of a budget-friendly studio nearby. I brought my own mat and towel to evade additional costs and settled into the 105-degree room before class commenced. My intention was to adjust to the heat. By the time class actually began, I was yearning for a frozen shower and a swift getaway. But, in all fairness, the class was an intense, yet fulfilling, 90 minutes of traditional yoga poses, breath control, and bodily exertion.

The week's end presented an opportunity to reward myself with a free run around my neighborhood. Having spent a week stretching, lifting, and sprinting, I was eager to cover some miles once more. I kept my pace easy, as several of my Greatist teammates and I would be participating in a complimentary 5K in Central Park on Saturday! Wish us luck!

The week's total? $8!

The Advantages: I enjoyed trying new things, eventually determining which types of exercise I cherish and those I may eventually invest in. A comprehensive gym with a variety of classes seem a worthwhile expenditure. However, paying to experience the sensation of being close to death in a 105-degree sweatbox isn't my cup of tea (at least not yet).

The Drawbacks: Exploring new venues and working with new teachers means I'm always exercising in unfamiliar surroundings, with no long-term instructors to build a rapport with.

The Strategies: Most gyms offer trial runs, and yoga classes often have introductory deals. Also, consider joining free running races in your town and tackling workouts in the tightest of spaces (push-ups are surprisingly versatile). Lastly, pairing with a workout buddy can significantly boost motivation.

Stay tuned for Week 4 mysteries as I pursue additional home exercises, reap the benefits of my half-priced Pilates class, and join my colleagues for a day of fitness fun. Don't forget the power of motivation and flexibility to adapt workouts to your surroundings!

Until Monday!
