Tragic incident: British Columbia man mourns wife and infant child, victims of a fallen tree
Tragedy Strikes Family at Comox Lake Campground
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Lynae Wolchuk, a 26-year-old mother, and her five-month-old son Elias lost their lives in a tragic accident at a campground on Comox Lake in British Columbia on July 31, 2025.
The incident occurred when a tree, estimated to be between 25 and 40 cm in diameter, fell on them. The tree had been growing about 20 metres into the woods. The RCMP and the BC Coroners Service are currently investigating the accident, with no criminality suspected.
The community came together to mourn and honour Lynae and Elias at a memorial held at Comox Marina Park. Speaking publicly for the first time since the tragedy, Josh Wolchuk, Lynae's husband and Elias' father, shared his profound grief. He described his life as "never whole again" and expressed his deep sorrow at losing his wife and son in one day.
Josh had spoken about his excitement when Lynae told him they were having a baby in June. Pregnancy was a breeze for Lynae, who carried their son for nine months with dignity and poise. The news of their baby boy, Elias, had been the best day of Josh's life, he said.
The family organized the community gathering to thank the community for their support during this difficult time. No further information about the family organizing the memorial was provided.
The accident is not categorized as a wildfire, heat warning, violent offense, targeted shooting, business matter, land claim, accessibility issue, or court ruling.
