Wolfgang Grupp: Depression is gone - Trigema's legendary CEO steps down after 55 years at the helm

Wolfgang Grupp, the long-time head of German clothing firm Trigema, stepped down as CEO in early 2024. The 82-year-old handed control to his son and daughter after leading the company for over five decades. Known for its "100% Made in Germany" underwear, casual wear, and sportswear, Trigema remains focused on its core products under the new leadership.

Grupp took charge of Trigema in 1969, inheriting the textile business from his grandfather. For 55 years, he built the brand into a well-known name, specialising in domestically produced garments. His decision to retire, however, left him struggling with a deep sense of loss and diminished purpose.

After leaving his role, Grupp faced severe depression, leading to a suicide attempt. He later expressed regret over the incident, stating he would never repeat it. Though he acknowledges the weight of responsibility, he now appreciates the slower rhythm of life at his age. Despite stepping back, Grupp still works in the office regularly and has begun writing his biography. His children, now running the company, live nearby, with his daughter next door. The family continues to guide Trigema, while Grupp senior serves as an advisor. No changes to the firm's strategic direction or international presence have been reported.

Trigema's leadership transition marks the end of an era for the German manufacturer. The company remains committed to its "100% Made in Germany" ethos, producing underwear, leisurewear, and sportswear under the next generation. Grupp's family stays closely involved, ensuring continuity in both business and personal life.
