Tulsa County Receives First COVID-19 Vaccine Doses as Distribution Begins
The first batch of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine has arrived in Tulsa County, Oklahoma. The delivery, containing 5,850 doses, is part of a larger effort to combat the pandemic. The vaccine, which requires two doses and has shown 95% efficacy, will be distributed according to the Oklahoma State Department of Health's priority framework, starting with phase one individuals. Saint Francis Health System is among the partners aiding in the distribution.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Robert Redfield approved the vaccine's use on December 12, 2020, following the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices' recommendation. Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum welcomed the initial supply, urging continued COVID-19 prevention measures. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had previously granted an emergency use authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer vaccine on December 11, 2020.
Tulsa County Commissioner Karen Keith encouraged eligible healthcare workers to get vaccinated. Dr. Bruce Dart, Executive Director of the Tulsa Health Department, praised the collaborative efforts in coordinating the vaccine distribution. Tulsa's vaccination drive involves multiple organizations and individuals, including health departments, hospitals, pharmacies, public facilities, and community groups. They work together to ensure the vaccine is distributed efficiently and fairly.
