Turkey employs nanotechnology to conserve renowned Mount Nemrut statues

The conservation of the iconic statues on Mount Nemrut in southeastern Turkey is undergoing a significant transformation, thanks to the implementation of nano-lime technology. This innovative method, which has shown promising results, is strengthening the internal structure of the statues and preventing water infiltration without altering their appearance.

Recent updates reveal that the initial restoration project, which commenced in 2022, focused on repairing microcracks using a nano-dispersed calcium hydroxide solution. The success of this pilot project has led to its expansion, with the current phase of work now encompassing the Eagle Head and the statue of King Antiochos I on the West Terrace.

The conservation process involves a meticulous approach. Surface deposits are first removed from the stone, followed by the injection of the nano-lime solution into fine cracks using syringes. This method not only strengthens the statues but also ensures they remain visually unchanged by preventing full closure of the cracks.

In the current phase of the project, an aesthetic filler will be used to prevent water penetration. This approach aims to maintain the statues' original appearance while ensuring their durability. The director of the Gaziantep Regional Laboratory for Restoration and Conservation, Ayşe Ebru Çorbacı, has confirmed the effectiveness of the nano-lime technology used in the conservation work.

Mehmet Alkan, Adıyaman Museum Director, emphasises the goal of the project: to ensure the monumental sculptures remain intact for generations to come. He stated this in a recent interview with the state-run Anadolu Agency (AA). The current phase of the project is anticipated to last approximately one month.

Following the success of the initial project, a more comprehensive restoration is planned for the year. The teams, led by the Gaziantep Regional Laboratory for Restoration and Conservation and the Adıyaman Museum Directorate, are committed to preserving these historical treasures for future generations to marvel at.
