Turmeric's Curcumin Revolutionizes Joint and Brain Health for Dogs and Cats
Turmeric, a spice long used in South Asian cooking, is now gaining attention in pet health. Its key compound, curcumin, is being studied and added to supplements for dogs and cats. Research suggests it may help with joint pain, cognition, and inflammation in animals.
For years, turmeric has been a staple in kitchens as a spice and natural dye. Now, its active ingredient, curcumin, is being explored for pet care. Studies show it may ease joint pain and improve mobility in older animals.
A 2023 study in dogs found that a diet with curcuminoid extract, hydrolyzed collagen, and green tea reduced pain over three months. Another trial in cats showed that omega-3 fatty acids combined with turmeric extract helped osteoarthritis symptoms. Research also suggests curcumin slows food spoilage—dog food with added curcumin had less protein and fat damage after six months in storage.
Different forms of curcumin have been tested for better absorption. In beagle dogs, three modified versions (β-cyclodextrin complex, solid dispersion, phospholipid complex) worked better than plain curcumin. An 18-week study also found that curcumin mixed with palmitoyl-glucosamine helped dogs stay pain-free while reducing medication.
Beyond joints, curcumin may support brain health and dental care. Aging dogs with cognitive decline showed better scores after 30 and 60 days on a curcumin supplement. Another study in beagles with gum disease found that a modified curcumin improved gum health and reduced inflammation.
Pet brands have taken note. Since 2019, Zesty Paws has sold 'Advanced Hip & Joint' chews with curcumin for dogs and cats. Pet Honesty launched 'Hip & Joint Chews' in 2020, targeting inflammation. Native Pet offers 'Turmeric Golden Paste' for joints and cognition, while Fera Pets makes organic turmeric chews for dental health. HolistaPet even combines CBD and turmeric in treats for anxiety and brain function.
Most research on turmeric and curcumin in pets focuses on osteoarthritis, though some studies explore cognition and dental benefits. Companies now market supplements with curcumin for joint support, pain relief, and even mental sharpness. As more evidence emerges, its role in pet health may continue to grow.
