Oak processionary caterpillars are emerging in large numbers recently. Authorities have implemented safety precautions at locations with high public exposure and frequent visits to safeguard the public. These insects are known to cause skin irritations, eye inflammations, itching, and asthma-like symptoms upon contact due to their bristly hairs. Public is advised to exercise extra caution beyond the protective measures taken.

City Officials Actively Combat Oak Processionary Caterpillar Outbreak

Düsseldorf city authorities have sprayed approximately 750 oak trees with a biocide as of this week, representing about 10% of the city's oak tree stock. This initiative aims to curb the proliferation of the oak processionary caterpillar, a notorious pest.

"Prevention measures prioritize trees with severe infestations from previous years, particularly those near playgrounds, schoolyards, kindergartens, cemetery main paths, and heavily trafficked streets," a city spokesperson stated.

In addition to the biocide treatment, the city deploys traps containing a natural attractant from the pedunculate oak to catch caterpillars. This method, proven effective in recent years, is employed on around 100 trees.

Individuals who come into contact with the caterpillar hairs should take the following precautions:

  • Avoid scratching the affected area to prevent further penetration of the hairs.
  • Change clothes immediately and shower thoroughly, including washing hair.
  • Seek immediate medical attention in case of eye contact, shortness of breath, or persistent skin irritation.

Residents who spot an infested tree are encouraged to report it to the city at [email protected], providing photos and a detailed description of the location. Private property owners are responsible for removal.

Mistaking the nests of oak processionary caterpillars for those of harmless bagworm moths is common due to their similar appearance. However, oak processionary caterpillar nests are found almost exclusively on oaks.

Enrichment data suggests taking proactive measures such as:

  • Avoiding contact with the caterpillars and their nests.
  • Being vigilant between May and July when the caterpillars are active.
  • Consulting a pest control professional for safe removal if caterpillars are found.

This enhanced caution is crucial to minimize health risks associated with oak processionary caterpillar hairs.

The city's health-and-wellness initiatives extend beyond the oak processionary caterpillar control, as they also emphasize mental health. (city's health-and-wellness initiatives)

In the realm of environmental science, the city is also dedicated to promoting the health of its urban forest, not just by managing pests, but also by reducing human impact on the environment. (city's dedication to promoting the health of its urban forest)
