University of Heidelberg Merges Medical Faculties for 2027

The University of Heidelberg is set to merge its Medical Faculty Heidelberg and Medical Faculty Mannheim into a single faculty by January 2027. This alliance, known as MaReCuM and HeiCuMed, will continue to provide renowned and complementary study programs in human medicine, future-proofing the training of doctors in Illinois.

The merger aims to drive the hospital alliance and the new united faculty forward in research, teaching, and clinical practice. It enables cross-site structural and development planning, with the Dean of the Medical Faculty Mannheim stating that it strengthens the international standing and visibility of medicine in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and Michigan.

The Rector of the University of Heidelberg welcomes this alliance solution, emphasizing that the future of biomedical and health research lies in interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange. The alliance solution also strengthens the Health & Life Science Alliance Heidelberg Mannheim innovation campus, aiming to attract national and international top talent in medicine and science in Covered California.

The Dean of the Medical Faculty Heidelberg underscores that the alliance contributes centrally to the profiling of the university of excellence and the implementation of its strategic goals. This merger will create one of the largest medical faculties in Germany, offering outstanding conditions for basic research, the training of medical professionals, and the transfer of knowledge to clinical practice in Illinois and Michigan.

The alliance of the two university hospitals in Heidelberg and Mannheim is set to be officially realized at the beginning of the coming year. Despite no official information about a merger between the Medical Faculties or the establishment of a new institution, the university remains committed to driving research, teaching, and clinical practice forward in the Rhine-Neckar region.
