Urgent Appeal: German Red Cross Requests Immediate Blood Donations Ahead of Holidays - Urge for Pre-Holiday Blood Donations Issued by German Red Cross

Hey there! 🤝 The German Red Cross (DRK) is urging all young and vibrant Saxony residents to lend a hand (or rather, an arm) before they take off on their summer holidays. Why, you ask? Because come the hat-soaking, ice-popped summer months, blood reserves tend to dwindle, and their current supply is stable, but can change at the drop of a hat 💃!

As you prepare to slip into your sunscreen and hit the beach, don't forget that blood platelet concentrates have a short shelf life and must be replenished frequently, especially during the hot summer months ☀️. To check if your generous act of donation is needed, set eyes on www.blutspende-nordost.de 🌐!

🚫 But before you catch those summer rays under the scorching sun 🌞, Dr. Kerstin Schweiger from the DRK Blood Donation Service North-East has a few pointers:

  1. Abstain from dehydration! Ensure you drink at least two to three glasses of water, juice, or tea in the two hours before donating, with an additional half a liter of liquid in warm weather.
  2. Protect yourself! Avoid venturing out under the sun immediately before and after donating, as well as refraining from intense physical activity during this time.
  3. Roll up your sleeves and rise to the occasion! To donate blood, you must be at least 18 years old, weigh a healthy 50 kg, and be in a hale and hearty state 💪!

Saxony, much like other federal states, is on the hunt for a deluge of young blood donors to keep up with the demand. The silver-haired donors in the Free State of Saxony average around the age of 50 👓, while the burgeoning, vibrant youth of today will soon be stepping up to the plate to keep our communities flowing with the essential red stuff 🩸.

The German Red Cross is reaching out to the younger generation through social media channels and organizing numerous events. June 14 marks the celebration of World Blood Donor Day, and on this day, you can roll up your sleeves and donate at many locations in Saxony—the regular Monday-to-Friday schedule be damned! 🤘
