Viersen’s New Program Teaches Teens Healthy Living Through Food Rescue

Kreis Viersen and KreisSportBund Viersen e.V. have launched 'Gesunde Kommune Kreis Viersen', a network aiming to educate ninth-grade students about a healthy lifestyle over 13 weeks. The program, starting on January 1, 2025, and funded until April 2027, seeks to sustainably anchor health awareness in the school community and beyond.

On September 25th, the waste management department of Kreis Viersen and Foodsharing kicked off the initiative by educating students about food waste and rescue. Following the session, students prepared a healthy snack using rescued food, demonstrating their newfound knowledge. Throughout the program, students will learn about nutrition, sustainability, mental health, and physical health, applying their knowledge by creating healthy snacks and a cookbook.

The network, funded by AOK Rheinland/Hamburg, Barmer, and Techniker Krankenkasse, has planned further action days, publication of health tips, and training of multipliers. Information about the network and planned activities can be found at www.gesundekommune-kreis-viersen.de

The 'Gesunde Kommune Kreis Viersen' network, set to run until the end of 2027, is committed to fostering a healthier world for students. By educating and empowering them, the program aims to create lasting change in the school community and beyond.
