Vladivostok sees alarming spike in childhood electrical injuries in one week
Vladivostok saw a rare but serious increase in childhood electrical injuries during February 2023. Three cases occurred within a single week, affecting children of different ages. All victims were rushed to Regional Children's Clinical Hospital No. 1 for urgent treatment. The first incident took place on February 11, when a one-year-old child received an electric shock after inserting a finger into a live socket. Just five days later, on February 16, an eight-month-old girl suffered a similar injury in the same way.
A third case involved a 17-year-old teenager, who was injured on February 14 while cleaning up flood damage. The teen's accident highlighted risks beyond simple curiosity, as older children often face hazards from inexperience or carelessness. Pediatric surgeon Elena Shatokhina explained that young children—especially those between nine months and five years—are most at risk due to natural inquisitiveness. She also warned that teenagers remain vulnerable, often because of reckless behaviour. All three injured children were hospitalised, but their conditions stabilised quickly, allowing them to be discharged soon after treatment.
The incidents serve as a reminder of the dangers posed by unprotected electrical outlets and unsafe environments. While the children recovered, medical professionals continue to stress the importance of supervision and preventive measures. Official statistics on such injuries in Primorsky Krai for 2023 remain unavailable in public records.
