New research confirms a strong link between weight loss and improved psoriasis symptoms. Nearly 80% of patients with the condition are overweight or obese. For the first time, rigorous scientific evidence shows that shedding excess weight can reduce flare-ups and enhance quality of life.

Studies now recommend adding weight management to standard psoriasis treatment plans. Doctors have long suspected a connection, but this is the first solid data proving that obesity worsens the disease. Patients who lost weight experienced fewer and less severe outbreaks, alongside better overall well-being.

Major pharmaceutical firms are also exploring advanced therapies. Novartis secured FDA approval for Cosentyx in psoriatic arthritis for children in December 2021. Eli Lilly continues research in related treatments, while Spanish scientists at IQAC-CSIC recently published findings on light-activated drug candidates in ACS Central Science. Smaller biotech companies, like Soligenix Inc., are pushing forward with their own investigations. Experts argue that tackling obesity should now be a core part of psoriasis care. Weight-loss programmes, combined with existing treatments, could offer patients a more effective and holistic approach.

The findings provide clear evidence that managing weight can ease psoriasis symptoms. With nearly four in five patients affected by excess weight, this approach could transform care standards. Pharmaceutical research continues alongside these lifestyle interventions, offering hope for better long-term outcomes.
