Why Chronic Fatigue Is Surging in Germany—and When to Seek Help

Fatigue affects hundreds of thousands of people in Germany, with cases rising sharply since the pandemic. The condition can stem from lifestyle habits, medical issues, or mental health struggles. While often overlooked, persistent tiredness may signal an underlying problem that needs attention.

In Germany, between 620,000 and 650,000 individuals currently live with chronic fatigue or exhaustion, many diagnosed with ME/CFS. Other common medical causes include anaemia, thyroid disorders, diabetes, sleep apnoea, and the after-effects of cancer treatment. Mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and seasonal affective disorder also contribute to long-term tiredness.

Doctors begin diagnosing fatigue by asking about its nature, duration, and any accompanying symptoms. They review medical history, lifestyle factors, and current medications. Blood or urine tests may follow to identify physical triggers such as deficiencies or infections.

When no medical cause is found, simple lifestyle adjustments can help. Drinking enough water, eating balanced meals, exercising regularly, and prioritising sleep often reduce tiredness. Avoiding known stressors and checking medication side effects may also make a difference. However, if fatigue lingers despite these changes—or if it worsens—consulting a doctor becomes essential.

For those with diagnosed conditions, following a treatment plan is key. Untreated fatigue can harm both physical and emotional health, making daily life harder over time.

Fatigue remains a widespread issue, with rising numbers in Germany tied to long COVID and other chronic illnesses. Recognising when tiredness goes beyond normal exhaustion helps people seek the right support. Whether through medical care or lifestyle changes, addressing the root cause can restore energy and improve overall well-being.
