Why Your Blanket Cocoon Could Be Harming Your Sleep Quality

Choosing the right bedding can make a big difference to sleep quality and health. While some people enjoy the cosy feel of a blanket-and-pillow cocoon, experts warn it may not be the best option for everyone. Instead, alternatives like weighted blankets are gaining attention for their ability to reduce anxiety and improve relaxation.

A firm mattress with a supportive pillow remains the top recommendation for a safe and restful night’s sleep. Sleeping in a makeshift cocoon of blankets and pillows, however, can create an uneven surface. This may lead to poor spine alignment, particularly in younger individuals whose bodies are still developing.

Despite the risks, some find comfort in the cocoon-like setup, often linking it to childhood memories of building forts. Yet, spending an entire night in such a position is not ideal for proper rest. Maria Tsygankova, an expert from Pirogov University, suggests weighted blankets as a better solution for those struggling with anxiety. These blankets provide deep pressure stimulation, which helps the body relax more quickly. Unlike thick, heavy blankets, weighted options offer the same calming effect without causing overheating. Deep pressure stimulation mimics the sensation of being gently held, which can ease stress and promote better sleep. For those who prefer warmth without weight, lighter alternatives may still provide comfort without compromising posture or sleep quality.

While a blanket-and-pillow cocoon might feel nostalgic or soothing, it is not the best choice for long-term sleep. A well-supported mattress and pillow remain essential for proper rest, especially for growing bodies. For anxiety relief, weighted blankets offer a practical alternative, combining deep pressure benefits with temperature control. These options help ensure a more comfortable and healthier night’s sleep.
