Wolfenbüttel's emergency services enter a new era after 25 years under Dr. Heida
Dr. Ulrich Heida has retired after 25 years as Medical Director of Emergency Services in Wolfenbüttel. His departure marks the end of a long career dedicated to improving emergency care in the region. Helge Trauden, an experienced anesthesiologist and senior physician, has now taken over the role.
Heida's tenure began in the late 1990s, where he combined work as an emergency paramedic and anesthesiologist. His firsthand experience shaped his approach to emergency response, focusing on both immediate care and long-term planning. Over the years, he worked to secure and expand local rescue services, pushing for the preservation and growth of rescue stations across the district.
During his time, he also developed improved protocols for mass-casualty incidents, ensuring faster and more coordinated responses. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Heida oversaw the district's vaccination centre, where over 136,000 doses were administered under his leadership.
The district manages emergency medical services in partnership with the German Red Cross and the city of Salzgitter. Since January, Wolfenbüttel Municipal Hospital has taken on emergency service responsibilities, adding to the region's medical infrastructure.
Trauden, who has served as an emergency physician since 2007, supported Heida from 2018 onward. As the new Medical Director, he will handle medical oversight, training for non-physician staff, and quality management. His background in anesthesiology and senior medical experience positions him well for the role.
Heida's retirement closes a significant chapter in Wolfenbüttel's emergency services. Trauden now leads the department, continuing the work of maintaining and improving emergency care. The district's partnerships and updated protocols remain central to its response capabilities.
