Yakutsk’s 17th District left in ruins as billions fund unfinished megaprojects

Over 40,000 residents in Yakutsk continue to live in crumbling, emergency housing while the city invests billions in unfinished megaprojects. The 17th District remains the worst-affected area, with severely neglected buildings and no clear solutions from local authorities. Now, a new infrastructure loan aims to address the crisis—but only after years of inaction.

The 17th District in Yakutsk has long been notorious for its derelict housing. Residents of 2/1 Nekrasov Street and 22 Khalturin Street endure extreme conditions in decaying buildings. Despite the severity, authorities have offered no long-term fixes, with resettlement only occurring when prosecutors step in.

The 5.3 billion ruble loan will fund new infrastructure and housing in the 17th District. If completed, it will allow thousands to leave dangerous buildings. However, with over 1,300 emergency structures still standing, many residents face years more of uncertainty.
