Poll: Work as Life's Purpose Loses Significance - Young Germans now prioritise life over work in career choices
A new study reveals shifting attitudes towards work among Germans, particularly the younger generation. Fewer people now see their jobs as a source of meaning, with many instead prioritising enjoyment and a balanced lifestyle. The findings come from the 2025 Zukunftsforschung Foundation, supported by British American Tobacco.
The research shows that only 33% of respondents still want fulfilling and enjoyable careers. This marks a sharp drop from 52% two decades ago. Instead, work-life balance, job security, and personal development have become the top priorities for young people in Germany.
Among those aged 18 to 24 and single adults between 25 and 49, the desire for enjoyment nearly matches the value placed on hard work. Meanwhile, 22% of all participants now focus on avoiding unnecessary hardship and simply enjoying life. The study highlights a broader trend: work is no longer the main source of purpose for many. Traditional career ambitions are giving way to flexibility, stability, and a life beyond the workplace.
The findings suggest a clear shift in workplace values across Germany. With fewer people seeking meaning in their jobs, employers may need to adapt to changing expectations. The emphasis on balance, security, and personal well-being appears to be reshaping career goals for the future.
