Young polar bear Mika recovers after emergency toe amputation at Karlsruhe Zoo

Veterinarians at Karlsruhe Zoo were forced to amputate a toe after Mika (1), the zoo's young polar bear, suffered an injury. The zoo has since announced that Mika has been allowed back onto the small outdoor enclosure with his mother, Nuka.

According to officials, Mika has recovered well from anesthesia and is receiving pain medication and antibiotics. "So far, the wound is healing well."

The incident occurred on Friday on the large outdoor exhibit, where Mika reportedly became trapped in a small gap near the front glass panel, catching his claw. "As he tried to free himself, part of a toe on his left front paw was torn off," the zoo explained. Veterinarians sedated Mika to examine the injury, and "the partially severed toe had to be removed."
