Beaconsfield mine collapse: 20 years since Australia's harrowing rescue

Twenty years ago, a mine collapse in Beaconsfield trapped two miners underground for 14 days. Brant Webb and Todd Russell survived the ordeal, but their colleague Larry Knight lost his life. The incident, which unfolded on May 9, 2006, became one of Australia’s most gripping rescue stories.

Webb and Russell were working deep inside the mine when a rockfall crushed their cage under 100 tonnes of debris. Trapped in the dark, they endured two weeks of uncertainty before rescuers finally reached them. The operation captivated the nation, turning the pair into household names.

The rescue effort was gruelling, testing both the physical and mental strength of everyone involved. Barry Easther, the former West Tamar Mayor, later called their survival a miracle. Even now, the psychological impact lingers for the survivors and those who helped free them. In the years since, the mine has been transformed into a museum, preserving the memory of the disaster. Greg Crowden, one of the rescuers, still keeps in touch with Webb—they now go fishing together. Yet for Webb and Russell, the trauma of those 14 days remains with them.

The Beaconsfield mine collapse left a lasting mark on the community and those who lived through it. While the site now serves as a reminder of the tragedy, the survivors continue to carry the weight of their experience. The rescue, though celebrated, came at a cost that still resonates two decades later.
