For every 1% reduction in annual working time, obesity levels dropped by 0.16%. Researchers pointed to work-related stress and lack of time for exercise as key factors in weight gain.

The study did not prove that long hours directly cause obesity. Income levels may also influence the results, as lower wages can limit access to healthy food and fitness options. Critics argue that a four-day week could reduce earnings for many workers, potentially worsening financial pressures. Despite the findings, the UK government has not introduced a mandatory four-day work week. However, recent changes make it easier for employees to request flexible working arrangements. The 4 Day Week Foundation claims that shorter weeks would benefit community health by giving people more time to stay active and manage stress.

The research adds weight to calls for reduced working hours as a way to tackle obesity. If adopted, a four-day week could see significant health improvements, though economic concerns remain. The government’s current stance allows flexibility but stops short of enforcing widespread change.
