Fort Smith Loses Decades-Old Maternity Unit as Baptist Health Closes Labour Services

Baptist Health is closing its labour and delivery unit at Fort Smith hospital. The decision ends decades of maternity care in the area. Staff and families will now face changes as the service shuts down. The unit has been helping mothers give birth since the 1950s. Over the years, it has delivered generations of babies to local families. Its long history made it a trusted part of the community.

The closure means about 40 employees, including Hamman, will leave their jobs. Baptist Health’s move also stops all comprehensive women’s health services at the hospital. No further details have been given on when the unit will officially close.

The shutdown removes a long-standing healthcare option for expectant mothers in Fort Smith. Those affected will need to seek maternity care elsewhere. The hospital has not announced any replacement services at this time.
