Portugal's €55M Weight-Loss Injection Craze Sparks Cost Concerns
Weight-loss injectable medications have surged in popularity across Portugal. Two brands, Wegovy and Mounjaro, now dominate the market as the most sought-after treatments for shedding excess kilos. Recent figures reveal just how much the country is spending on these drugs. Between January and March this year, Portuguese consumers spent roughly €55.2 million on weight-loss injections. This breaks down to over €613,000 spent each day on these medications.
The cost of a single pen varies widely. Prices start at €182.92 for lower doses and climb to €337.63 for stronger formulations. Each pen contains four weekly doses, covering a month’s supply. Demand has been growing steadily. In 2022 alone, more than 512,803 packages of these weight-loss pens were sold across the country.
The sharp rise in spending highlights the increasing reliance on prescription weight-loss treatments. With costs ranging from €182 to €337 per pen, these medications represent a significant expense for many. Sales data confirms their growing role in Portugal’s approach to weight management.
