Russian Surgeons Remove 1.5 kg Tumor from Woman's Thigh in Rare Case
Surgeons at Vladivostok Clinical Hospital No. 2 have successfully removed a large tumor from a 52-year-old woman. The patient was admitted with complaints of pain in her thigh. She had previously undergone two surgeries to remove a lipoma in the same area, but the growth returned and continued to expand rapidly, according to a statement from the Primorsky Territory Health Ministry.
"The new growth had reached a substantial size—about 10×10 cm and weighing 1.5 kg, roughly the size of a small melon. For this area of the body, that is a significant mass," the statement read.
Due to its aggressive growth and frequent recurrences, doctors initially suspected a malignant process. However, histological examination confirmed the tumor was benign. The surgery was successful, and the patient recovered without complications.
Earlier, physicians at the Thousand-Bed Hospital saved the life of a 60-year-old Vladivostok resident after removing a giant uterine fibroid weighing 15 kilograms—more than the average weight of a one-year-old child.
