Robotic Surgery Advances in the UK: Cromwell Hospital Leads the Way

In a significant development for surgical procedures in the UK, Cromwell Hospital in London has become the first to perform Hepato Pancreato Biliary (HPB) and distal pancreatectomy operations using the da Vinci SP robotic surgical system.

The surgeries, performed by Professor Long Jiao, the chair and consultant in hepato-pancreatico-biliary surgery (HPB) at Hammersmith and Royal Marsden Hospitals of Imperial College London, mark a new era in surgical precision and recovery outcomes for complex procedures.

The da Vinci SP system, part of Intuitive’s advanced robotic surgical platforms, offers high-definition 3D vision and multi-articulated instruments that mimic natural hand movements. Surgeons operate from a console, which provides better ergonomics and precision compared to traditional laparoscopy.

The system, which received CE mark approval in January 2024, has been implemented in complex operations including HPB surgeries and distal pancreatectomy. This technology allows these surgeries to be performed through a single small incision, enhancing precision and control.

Cromwell Hospital's use of the da Vinci SP system aligns with NHS England's projection that robotic surgery will support about half a million operations annually by 2035. Robotic assistance is expected to become the default method for about 90% of keyhole (minimally invasive) surgeries such as organ removal for cancer, significantly increasing from the current one in five operations.

The robotic system is not limited to HPB and pancreatic surgery. Cromwell Hospital has also performed the first gynaecology operations in the UK using the da Vinci SP system. This demonstrates the hospital's leading expertise in combining endoscopic therapies and robotic surgery for cancer patients.

In addition to the UK, HCA, the first UK provider of advanced robotic-assisted methods for thoracic patients, is also utilising the da Vinci SP system for thoracic surgeries.

The da Vinci SP system represents a significant technological advancement in UK surgery, enabling safer, less invasive operations with improved precision and recovery outcomes at specialized centres like Cromwell Hospital.
