Border of Thailand Reopens, Paving Way for Return of Controversial Cambodian Government Official

In a significant display of cross-border cooperation, Thailand facilitated the safe return of Brigadier General Lao Bunmaeng, a 62-year-old former Cambodian Deputy Chief of Staff and cancer patient, from Bangkok to his home in Battambang Province, Cambodia.

The operation, which took place on July 5, was coordinated by Captain Siam Chirdchid, Head of the Chanthaburi Area Border Coordination Unit, and involved the 2nd Marine Ranger Control Unit of the Marine Ranger Task Force, the Thai-Cambodian Border Coordination Unit, the 5340th Marine Ranger Company, and Trat Provincial Immigration.

The humanitarian transfer was carried out through an emergency border crossing, allowing Brigadier General Lao Bunmaeng to cross from Thailand at the Ban Laem border crossing in Thep Nimit sub-district, Pong Nam Ron district, Chanthaburi province. This act exemplifies Thailand’s commitment to assisting neighbouring countries in times of medical emergency.

The Chanthaburi Area Border Coordination Unit played a crucial role in managing the process to ensure a smooth passage for the former military official. The collaboration between Thai and Cambodian authorities underscores the strong bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Despite the humanitarian act, it is important to note that the transfer did not lead to any clashes between Cambodians and Thais at Prasat Ta Khwai, a significant archaeological site located near the border.

Rear Admiral Charamphakorn Promphakorn, the Deputy Commander of the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defence Command, was also involved in the coordination of the transfer, but further details regarding his role were not provided.

Brigadier General Lao Bunmaeng had been receiving medical treatment in Bangkok, and his return home allows him to continue his care and recuperation in his native country. No further information about his current health condition or location was available at the time of publication.

This humanitarian act serves as a testament to the strong ties between Thailand and Cambodia, demonstrating their willingness to work together in times of need.

During the humanitarian transfer of Brigadier General Lao Bunmaeng, it was also noteworthy that Rear Admiral Charamphakorn Promphakorn, the Deputy Commander of the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defence Command, played a part in the coordination. Furthermore, this cross-border cooperation, while focusing on medical emergencies, did not disrupt general news or travel between the two countries, as demonstrated by the incident at Prasat Ta Khwai remaining peaceful. In light of this, it can be observed that health and wellness, politics, and even science, in terms of cross-border collaborative efforts, are integral parts of the strong relationship between Thailand and Cambodia.
