Daily Fruit Juice or Smoothies May Reduce Depression Symptoms, Study Finds
A daily glass of fruit juice or a smoothie could help ease symptoms of depression, according to new research. The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, tracked 42 adults who initially ate too few fruits and vegetables. After four weeks, those who drank juices or smoothies regularly showed noticeable improvements in mood. The research involved adults with low fruit and vegetable intake. Participants were guided to reach the recommended five daily servings, with some also drinking a glass of pure fruit juice or a smoothie each day.
After a month, the group consuming juices and smoothies scored 2.52 points lower on a depression assessment. The positive effect may come from the drinks’ high levels of vitamins, antioxidants, and bioactive compounds. These substances help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which are linked to depression. Importantly, volunteers still got enough fibre from whole fruits and vegetables. The study also found no harmful effects on blood sugar or metabolism from the added juices and smoothies. The authors concluded that small dietary changes, like increasing fruit and vegetable intake, could support better mental health.
The findings suggest that drinking 100% fruit juice or smoothies daily may help lower depressive symptoms. Participants saw measurable improvements without negative side effects on their metabolism. Researchers now highlight the potential of simple diet adjustments in managing mental well-being.
