EU reviews manganese-betaine complex as new animal feed additive
A request has been made to authorise manganese (II) betaine complex as a nutritional additive for all animal species. The application, submitted under EU regulations, proposes its use in premixtures and compound feed. Authorities are now reviewing the proposed methods for testing and safety limits. The feed additive consists of at least 17% manganese and 42% betaine by weight. Its intended use includes a maximum manganese level of 100 mg/kg for fish and 150 mg/kg for other animals.
The Applicant suggested several methods for analysis. For total manganese in the additive, premixtures, and compound feed, they proposed ICP-AES using EN 15621. The European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) also supports EN 15510, ISO 6869, and EN 17053 for manganese testing. Additionally, the EURL approved the ICUMSA method based on HPLC-RI for betaine quantification, as recommended by the Applicant.
To confirm the formation of the manganese (II) betaine complex, the Applicant put forward the XRD method. The EURL deemed this approach suitable for verification. The proposed additive must meet strict testing standards before approval. Official methods for manganese and betaine analysis have been recommended by the EURL. If authorised, the product will be used in animal feed under regulated manganese limits.
