Health insurance rewards go unclaimed—are you missing hundreds?
Heilbronn (dpa/tmn) – Whether through membership in a sports club or gym, preventive medical check-ups, or other health-promoting measures, many health insurance providers reward their policyholders for health-conscious behavior with bonuses. The catch? Not all insured individuals are even aware of these reward programs—or they miss the deadlines for claiming them.
"Our experience shows that significant sums go unclaimed every year because policyholders fail to apply for their bonuses or are unaware of the deadlines," says Siegfried Karle, president of the consumer organization Geld und Verbraucher (GVI – Money and Consumers).
Check Now Whether You Can Benefit from These Programs
With the year drawing to a close, consumers should double-check whether they might still qualify for rewards. According to the GVI, many health insurers require proof of health-related activities completed in 2025 to be submitted by a set deadline—miss it, and the bonus is lost.
For many providers, documentation can be submitted digitally—such as uploading a photo via an app or the insurer's online portal.
Substantial Savings Possible—Families Benefit Most
The GVI notes that families stand to gain the most from these bonus programs, as each member can earn their own reward, significantly increasing the total payout.
The financial advantage of participating can be substantial—depending on the insurer, policyholders may receive several hundred euros in cash bonuses per year. A quick review of policy documents or a brief call to the health insurance provider is often all it takes to find out how to submit proof of eligibility.
