Martin Short's new Netflix documentary reveals laughter and loss in Marty, Life Is Short

A new documentary about comedy legend Martin Short will soon be available to stream. Marty, Life Is Short arrives on Netflix on 12 May 2023. The film explores the actor’s long career as well as the personal losses that have shaped his life. Martin Short first rose to fame in the 1980s with unforgettable characters like Ed Grimley and Nathan Thurm. These roles on SCTV and Saturday Night Live made him a household name. Decades later, he brought Jiminy Glick to life in the 2000s and now stars as Oliver Putnam in Only Murders in the Building.

The documentary also delves into the tragedies he has faced. Between the ages of 12 and 20, Short lost his father, mother, and brother. In 2010, his wife, Nancy Dolman, died of ovarian cancer. Then, in February 2023, his daughter Katherine took her own life at 42.

Short has spoken openly about grief and mental illness. He compares it to a terminal disease, much like cancer. The film examines how these experiences have influenced his work and outlook. Marty, Life Is Short offers a candid look at both the triumphs and heartbreaks of Martin Short’s life. The documentary arrives on Netflix next month, giving audiences a deeper understanding of the man behind the comedy. It highlights his resilience in the face of profound personal loss.
