Miracle Baby Alton Thrives After 22-Week Premature Birth
Baby Alton Krause has defied the odds after being born four months early. Weighing just 1 pound at birth, he spent nearly five months in intensive care. Now, his family is preparing to celebrate their first Mother’s Day at home with him healthy and thriving. Kayla Krause discovered she was pregnant on Mother’s Day last year. But the joy turned to worry when Alton arrived at just 22 weeks, far earlier than expected. Born in September, he weighed barely a pound and faced severe complications.
His tiny lungs struggled, and doctors placed him on a high-frequency jet ventilator. For 142 days, Alton remained in the NICU under constant care. Dr. Eddie Chang, a neonatologist at Jefferson Abington Hospital, played a key role in his treatment.
Against expectations, Alton survived without lasting issues. He now weighs 12 pounds and is hitting all his developmental milestones. Recently, the Krause family returned to the NICU to thank the medical team who saved his life. This Mother’s Day will mark a special milestone for the Krauses. Alton’s recovery from such a fragile start has allowed them to bring him home for the first time. The family’s gratitude towards the hospital staff remains strong as they look forward to a future they once feared might not be possible.
