Kazakhstan recently marked the 90th anniversary of Olzhas Suleimenov, a renowned poet, scholar and statesman. His influence stretches across literature, law and national identity. For decades, his ideas have helped shape the country’s cultural and legal foundations.

The occasion on 18 May 2023 highlighted his enduring impact on modern Kazakhstan—from constitutional principles to the way the state views human dignity and justice. Suleimenov’s literary and scholarly works, including his celebrated book AZиЯ (AZ-IA), remain cornerstones of Kazakhstan’s intellectual life. Through poetry and research, he explored the intersections of cultures, languages and civilisations. His famous phrase—'elevate the steppe without diminishing the mountains'—captured his belief in mutual respect among peoples.

His vision of law was never abstract. Instead, he saw it as a practical tool for ensuring justice, strengthening statehood and maintaining social stability. These principles now echo in Kazakhstan’s updated constitutional framework, which emphasises fairness, accountability and human rights.

Throughout independent Kazakhstan’s history, Suleimenov championed humanism, intercultural dialogue and the state’s duty to its citizens. His ideas aligned closely with modern constitutionalism: protecting human dignity, rejecting dehumanisation in public life and demanding government responsibility. Today, as the country pushes to humanise its legal system, his legacy remains a guiding force. Suleimenov’s contributions extend beyond literature into the core values of Kazakhstan’s state and society. His emphasis on human-centred governance and cultural respect continues to inform national policies.

As the country evolves, his principles—rooted in justice, solidarity and dignity—stay embedded in its legal and cultural development.
