Seniors face rising dangers from phone addiction and online scams

Phone addiction is no longer just a young person’s problem. Older generations are now spending more time glued to screens—sometimes with dangerous consequences. From financial scams to fatal encounters, excessive screen use is affecting seniors in worrying ways. Stories of older adults falling victim to online deception are growing. Abigail, a 66-year-old woman, lost her entire life savings of $81,000 to a scammer. The fraudster used AI to impersonate actor Steve Burton, convincing her to hand over the money.

In another tragic case, 76-year-old Thongbue Wongbandue died after travelling to meet an AI-generated woman he had met online. The encounter turned out to be part of a scam, highlighting the real-world dangers of digital deception. Similarly, an AI-generated US Army service member named Jessica Foster was exposed as part of a fraudulent scheme. Beyond scams, older adults are displaying risky behaviour linked to phone use. Many now cross roads without looking, absorbed in their screens. Others play videos loudly in public spaces like aeroplanes or supermarket queues. The trend shows that grandparents, not just Gen Z, are becoming the most distracted by technology. Even the creators of AI influencers are profiting from this shift. A medical student in India made an AI character named Emily Hart and earned money from its online presence. Such examples reveal how deeply digital habits are changing across all age groups.

The rise in screen addiction among older adults carries serious risks. Financial losses, safety hazards, and even fatal outcomes have been linked to excessive phone use. As technology becomes more embedded in daily life, the consequences for seniors are becoming harder to ignore.
