The Rev. Fran Toy, a trailblazing figure in the Episcopal Church, has passed away. She was the first Asian-American woman to be ordained a priest in the Diocese of California, making history on June 8, 1985. Toy, who turned 90 in 2024, died on Dec. 28, leaving behind a legacy of service and leadership.

Toy's ordination was just the beginning of her impactful ministry. She served as an interim rector at several congregations in the Diocese of California, bringing her unique perspective and leadership to various communities. Notably, she was the first female deputy to General Convention from the Diocese of California in 1988, further cementing her place in the church's history.

Toy's influence extended beyond her parish work. She served as a deployment officer at Church Divinity School of the Pacific and on The Episcopal Church's deployment board, helping to place clergy in need of pastoral care. She also served as a clergy representative to provincial synods and a member of Executive Council from 1991 to 1997, contributing to the church's governance at a national level. Her commitment to spiritual growth was evident in her role as a spirituality faculty member for CREDO Institute from 1999 to 2005.

The Rev. Fran Toy's death marks the end of an era. Her pioneering spirit and dedicated service have left an indelible mark on the Episcopal Church. Bishop Diana Akiyama, the first Asian American woman bishop in The Episcopal Church, reflected on Toy's impact, highlighting her courage and leadership.
