Altai Krai braces for relentless mosquito and midge swarms this May

Warm May weather has arrived in Altai Krai, signalling the start of insect season. Residents are already facing bites, with 490 tick incidents reported in just one week. Now, mosquitoes and midges are set to emerge as their larvae develop in standing water. Last year, the region saw the most complaints about blackflies and no-see-ums. These tiny pests are difficult to deter—unlike mosquitoes, they cannot be blown away by wind or swatted by hand. Instead, they can crawl into eyes, ears, and even under clothing, causing irritation.

Adult mosquitoes may appear within two weeks if the warm, calm conditions continue. However, strong winds with gusts reaching 25 m/s could disrupt their breeding cycle and prevent a large-scale outbreak. Authorities advise residents to prepare by stocking up on insect repellents. Wearing long-sleeved cotton clothing with hoods is also recommended to reduce exposure. The measures aim to limit discomfort as the region braces for another active insect season.
