Quebec's top foods revealed: Berries, cheese, and a sodium struggle

A major study on Quebec’s eating habits has revealed the province’s favourite foods and nutritional trends. The NutriQuébec project, the largest of its kind, gathered data from nearly 7,000 participants who recorded over 26,000 meals. The findings highlight which fruits, vegetables, and snacks appear most often on plates across the region. Berries top the list as the most-eaten fruit in Quebec, beating bananas, apples, and grapes. When it comes to vegetables, onions, tomatoes, and carrots are the clear favourites. Yet despite these preferences, only 36% of adults in the province meet the daily recommendation of five servings of fruits and vegetables.

Cheese stands out as a staple, appearing in nearly every meal. It’s also one of the top four snacks, alongside apples, potato chips, and bananas. Bread plays another key role in diets, contributing almost as much sodium as seasonings, condiments, and sauces combined. The study also found that most adults struggle with sodium intake. Fewer than two in ten consume less than the recommended 2,300 milligrams per day.

The NutriQuébec results provide a detailed snapshot of what people in the province eat. With berries leading fruit consumption and cheese a constant presence, the data reflects both popular choices and areas where diets fall short. The findings could help shape future health guidelines and public nutrition campaigns.
